Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik evaluated the decision of the US to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal

Minister for EU Affairs stated over his twitter account that the US President Donald Trump will leave the Iran nuclear deal and once more apply the sanctions against Iran that had been suspended in 2015.  Minister Çelik emphasized that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) published reports certifying that Iran was complying with the deal. Minister Ömer Çelik said: “US decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal will not be conducive to a better situation.”

Indicating that Türkiye’s principled position on all nuclear weapons represented the ‘highest standard’, Minister Ömer Çelik reminded that the UK, Germany and France had underlined their commitment to the deal with a joint statement.

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik emphasized that these three countries had stated the importance of the nuclear deal for their shared security. Minister Ömer Çelik also noted that it was emphasized in the statement that the deal “remains the binding international legal framework for the resolution of the dispute about the Iranian nuclear programme.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik said: “Unfortunately, the US decision represents an approach that will open the door to very unpleasant developments. While there is no evidence that Iran is in violation of the deal, the US decision to withdraw from the deal is an opposite position vis-a-vis its allies. We are in times when we need more negotiations. While serious problems with North Korea are being resolved by diplomacy and there emerges a new hope for diplomacy, to try to damage this deal, which works and Iran complies with, is wrong.”
