 EU Heads of State and Government met in Brussels


      President van Rompuy and the EU heads of state and government agreed on the "European 2020 Strategy", which aims to supply financial and fiscal stability within the Union and the member states. Leaders also agreed on representing the EU position on the basis of the strategy, in the G20 Summit, which will be held in Toronto.

      European Council underlined the importance of the Reflection Group's "Project Europe 2030: Challenges and Opportunities" report, for the future works of the EU.       


      Council also revised the current positions of the EU and the member states on the climate change issue and prepare for the upcoming UN Conference in Cancun.


      Another decision of the Council is supporting the Commission's opinion for the start of Iceland's accession negotiations for the EU membership considering the fact that Iceland meets the political criteria set by the Copenhagen European Council.

 

      Council also welcomed the efforts of Türkiye and Brazil to secure the progress on Iran's nuclear program, however, it is declared that these efforts are not enough to solve the issue and adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution 1929 is welcomed by the EU.
