The European Media Freedom Act has been published in the Official Journal of the EU

The Regulation 2024/1083 (EU), also known as the European Media Freedom Act, entered into force on 7 May 2024, as the first EU regulation to protect media independence and pluralism.

The Regulation introduces safeguards against political interference in editorial decisions and surveillance of journalists. In this context, it establishes common rules to ensure the proper functioning of the internal market for media services and establishes the European Board for Media Services.

The Regulation emphasises the editorial freedom of the press and lists measures to be taken for the effective protection of journalists' sources and confidential correspondence. It also regulates that member states should set transparent and impartial criteria for the funding of press services as a public service.

Various dates have been set in the Regulation for the implementation of the new rules and obligations in the Member States.
