Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik Participated in the Helsinki Policy Forum

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik made a speech at the session titled "Opportunities and Challenges in Our Region: Need For a Sustainable Framework Based On Regional Ownership” at the Helsinki Policy Forum held at Van. Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik pointed out that important matters pertaining to the Middle East and North Africa could be discussed in various parts of the world and noted that it was important for such a meeting to be held here. Minister Ömer Çelik, who pointed out that we were facing the greatest mobility of persons since World War II and the human tragedy that was the reason for this mobility, said that Türkiye played an important role in relieving the pressure on Europe and hosted more than 3 million Syrians and 400.000 Iraqis.

Minister Ömer Çelik pointed out that terrorism was a common threat. Minister Çelik, who pointed out the importance of the territorial integrity and national forces of the countries in the region, also said that the tendencies for secession, separation and fragmentation were not only a threat for the Middle East but also for Europe.

Minister Çelik, who emphasised that a sovereign area for all ethnic group was an illusion with destructive consequences in view of current political and economic challenges,  referred to Catalonia and Northern Iraq referendum as examples.

- "International cooperation against terrorism is a must "

Minister Ömer Çelik, who said “If we are not committed to eliminating all terrorists without discrimination, then we will fail in the fight against terrorism”, also indicated that a full capacity international cooperation was necessary regarding all terrorist networks.

- "Türkiye is the most generous country in the world"

Minister Ömer Çelik, who said that Türkiye was, in addition to being the 17th largest economy in the world, was the most “generous” country in the world with reference to humanitarian aid and development assistance, indicated that it was necessary now to think more about what could be done at the regional level. Minister Çelik, who said that Türkiye was making great efforts to re-establish peace and stability in the region, also said that it was not possible to do this alone. Minister Çelik, who said that there was a new period of change in the world where old alliances had been broken and new alliances and hostilities had been established, stated “A more difficult and complicated world is awaiting us. Therefore, we have to engage in more political and diplomatic thinking in order to prevent conflicts.”
