Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik Evaluated the Developments

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik evaluated the most recent developments in Europe over his twitter account and pointed to the threat of the extreme right and fascism in Europe.

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çeik said: “Europe needs to start a real fight against this threat by taking a stance against opposition to Türkiye and Islam. Otherwise, visible walls with barbed wire will replace the walls that are invisible as yet.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik indicated in a statement over his twitter account that Türkiye has been warning Europe for years against the threat of the extreme right and fascism. Minister Çelik also pointed out that the extreme right used the label of hostility to Islam and opposition to Türkiye in order to obscure its fascism.

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik pointed out that those who collaborated in or were acquiescent of hostility to Islam and opposition to Türkiye sent out an invitation to the extreme right and said that fascism found a hospitable environment due to these people. Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik said:

“The threat against humanity and democracy is substantial. For this reason, European politics cannot protect democracy without fighting against the hostility to Islam and opposition to Türkiye. The fall of the Berlin Wall was a revolutionary turning point for European integration and democracy. It was assumed that a threat to this would come from outside of Europe. Just the opposite happened.  ‘Ideological Berlin Walls’ were set up in Europe. The rise of the extreme right and the failure of a humanitarian policy on the migrant issue increased the number of those who wished to divide Europe with ‘ideological walls’. We have been warning Europe for a year regarding ‘ideological Berlin Walls’.”

Minister of EU Affairs Ömer Çelik reminded the press of President Frank Walter Steinmeier’s statement on the occasion of the commemoration of the 27. anniversary of the unification of Germany in Mainz  regarding the creation of other walls, with reference to the extreme right which had gained high number of votes in the elections. Minister Çelik indicated that the German President had also noted as a threat what he called “ideological Berlin Walls.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik also said: “We warn against these ideological Berlin Walls. The threat has increased. Failure to respond the opposition to Türkiye and Islam have strengthened the builders.  Europe needs to start a real fight against this threat by taking a stance against opposition to Türkiye and Islam. Otherwise, concrete walls with barbed wire will replace the walls that cannot be seen as yet. Europe is at a very important milestone to counter hate crimes with democratic politics.”
