Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik evaluated statements on Operation Olive Branch

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik said on his twitter account: ”Reactions to Operation Olive Branch demonstrate the prevalence of double standards in the fight against terrorism. Some say ‘don't add a new war to the existing war’. They do not take the terrorist attacks we face into consideration. This is to clearly say ‘don't fight against terrorism’.”

Emphasizing that Türkiye was not adding a new war to the existing war, Minister Ömer Çelik pointed out that Türkiye was exercising its right to self-defence in order to bring an end to the atrocities carried out by terrorist organisations carrying out brutal attacks on the country.  Minister Ömer Çelik stated: “Are not those who are concerned about Operation Olive Branch also concerned about attacks carried out by terrorist organisations? There are others who say ‘we understand your concerns but it is necessary to focus on Da’esh’.”

Underlining that Türkiye’s fight against terrorism was legitimate and utmost care was taken to avoid civilian casualties, Minister Ömer Çelik said:

“They are concerned about Da’esh, which attacks them as well as us. However, they apply double standards when they sympathise with the PKK terrorist organisation, which attacks us but causes no harm to them. This mentality views the world from a perspective that places a value on human life according to where they live or their ethnicity and religion. Those who attack them are considered ‘terrorists’ whereas those who attack us are overlooked. This is political and ethical bankruptcy.“

Minister Ömer Çelik, who reminded the ones who kept beginning their statements with the words “civilian loss” about the loss of civilian lives caused by the rocket attacks by terrorists, said:

“We are carrying out a legitimate fight. Unfortunately, terrorist organisations are provided with arms by our allies. They also obtain ideological support when our allies take an approach which involves the use of the words “concern” and “civilian loss” in an unjustified and inaccurate manner. Why have we not heard the same statements of “concern” and “civilian loss” while our people were attacked with rockets provided to terrorist organisations by our allies? Those who first think of cooperation with Türkiye when there is a need to fight against terrorism anywhere else in the world, sympathise with terrorist organisations when Türkiye fights against terrorism for its own security.
