Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director for EU Affairs Ambassador Faruk Kaymakcı attended the International Town Twinning Summit in Ankara

The online International Town Twinning Summit was held on 12-13 November 2020 within the scope of “Town Twinning Between Türkiye and EU Project” implemented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Directorate for EU Affairs.

The Summit was commenced with the opening speeches of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Director for EU Affairs Ambassador Faruk Kaymakcı, Head of EU Delegation to Türkiye Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, Chairman of Local Administration Policies Council Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye Prof. Dr. Şükrü Karatepe and Mayor of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality and President of Union of Municipalities of Türkiye Fatma Şahin. President of Congress of Local and Regional Authorities-Council of Europe and Vice President of Committee of Regions Anders Knape participated in the Summit through a video message.  

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Director for EU Affairs Ambassador Faruk Kaymakcı emphasized the importance of the solidarity between local and regional actors in both Türkiye and EU, developing mutual working relationships and responding to common challenges together during the Türkiye’s EU membership process.

Representatives of local authorities, universities, civil society organizations in addition to numerous international organizations from Türkiye and the EU participated in the Summit.  In the two days Summit, panels and twin talks were held on the issues of Town Twinning Between Türkiye and EU Project, liveable cities, roles of local and regional governments for combating COVID-19, EU enlargement and Türkiye, nature and green cities, best practices for local governments and sustainable cities.
