EU Minister Ömer Çelik’s press meeting and remarks on recent developments

Minister for AU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik held a press meeting in Ankara and made statements on current developments. EU Minister Ömer Çelik called the Dutch blockade of Turkish ministers “a threat to the basic values of the European Union”. Speaking to reporters from TV channels, newspapers and news agencies, EU Minister Ömer Çelik said "This isn’t just about Türkiye. That approach targets all the people of Europe".

EU Minister Ömer Çelik said that if the Europeans continue to ignore the problem, the racist and fascist practices of extreme-right politicians will spread across Europe. He contended that the recent bans of Turkish ministers by Germany and the Netherlands are "violations of democracy and the rule of law. Cancelling the flight permit of Turkish ministers, preventing them from entering the consulate which is part of our soil, and arresting our charge d'affaires are clearly crimes, and those crimes were committed by the Dutch government."

EU Minister Ömer Çelik called on the EU and the Council of Europe to condemn those violations and "carry out a joint fight against that fascist policies of the Netherlands." “This is not an issue to be impartial about," he stressed. "It is not enough to suggest that we reduce tension. They should see why the tension is rising and take necessary steps." he said.

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik suggested reconsidering the EU-Türkiye refugee deal, especially the parts concerning with the refugees trying to enter Europe by land and said  "Türkiye has no obligation at this stage to continue the agreement since the EU has failed to comply with it. Nonetheless, we have acted out of humane responsibility", adding Türkiye had prevented a lot of deaths in the Aegean Sea after the deal.

EU Minister Ömer Çelik also criticized EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini for making "an entirely incorrect statement" after the Netherlands barred Turkish government ministers from meeting Turks in Rotterdam. "Mogherini made a statement which has no effect and is entirely incorrect," he said, adding it was an "apolitical" statement which only aims to "brush over" the issue.
