Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik evaluated statements by EP Türkiye Rapporteur Piri
Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik evaluated the statement by European Parliament (EP) Türkiye rapporteur Kati Piri who said “the PKK and similar organisations are not a threat to us but Da’esh is a threat to us”. Minister Ömer Çelik said regarding these statements: “The matter is clear from the perspective of Türkiye. Türkiye will fight against Da’esh and the PKK. We will not take seriously any distorted statements by the Türkiye rapporteur regarding Türkiye.”
Minister Ömer Çelik condemned the statements made by Piri (over his twitter account) and said: “I am glad that the rapporteur has expressed her views. This finally ends the unpleasant play on words.”
Minister Çelik pointed out the rapporteur also commented that Türkiye considered the PKK to be the priority threat and not Da’esh and said “ It is rare when there is such a clear expression of a distorted approach to terrorism.”
Minister Ömer Çelik said: “Türkiye is the only country that fights against both Da’esh and the PKK with the same determination. It is clear that the PKK is supported and protected in some places in Europe. When Türkiye was attacked by Da’esh, we saw that Europe demonstrated solidarity by projecting the Turkish flag onto public buildings in some cities. However, we never saw such solidarity following attacks on Türkiye by the PKK.”
Minister Ömer Çelik also said: “Apparently, Piri and others like her believe that humanity exists only in their part of the world and they only regard those who threaten them as terrorists, but they don’t perceive the ones who attack others as threats. This is clearly associated with a view of humans rather than terrorism. The ideologies of terrorist organisations are able to thrive because of such distorted views. It is regretable that the EP Türkiye rapporteur also shares this outlook.
It is unfortunate that a politician that either does not have a basic knowledge of the issues or rejects it, reports for Türkiye in the largest parliament in Europe.”
Minister Ömer Çelik emphasized that the matter was clear from the perspective of Türkiye and said “Türkiye will fight against Da’esh and the PKK, as well as similar terrorist organisations. We will not take seriously any distorted statements by the Türkiye rapporteur regarding Türkiye.”
