Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik Attended the Opening Ceremony of the Adana Göltepe Training Facilities of the Ministry of Justice

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik attended the opening ceremony of the Adana Göltepe Training Facilities of the Ministry of Justice along with Minister of Justice Abdulhamit.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, Minister Çelik said: "Since I am the Minister for EU Affairs, I often hear criticism of our judicial matters in many parts the world. I always say the Turkish judiciary strives most to preserve the balance between freedom and security in the world, despite all the challenges of a coup attempt and the threat of terrorism.”

Minister Çelik, who indicated that he read about coup attempts since his school years and followed documentaries said: “I say that nowhere in the world has there been such a heroic fight against a coup attempt, which remains within the limits of the law and protects the constitution. This has been due to the efforts of heroic members of the judiciary. We are proud of this. For this reason, to increase the facilities and capacities for Turkish judiciary and improve their working condition is to ensure the well-being of the Republic of Türkiye.”

Minister Çelik said “We are open to criticism regarding the rule of law but we will not allow Türkiye to be degraded on this matter” and went on to say “We are so confident regarding our judicial systems that we able to say to those criticising us that we can go ahead and open Chapter 23 and 24. These are the matters of the judiciary, rule of law, freedom of press and freedom of thought. While the EU officials believe that we want to avoid Chapters 23 and 24, I tell them that we should go ahead and open these chapters. We are not avoiding discussion on the principles of rule of law and freedom of expression and thought. Quite the contrary, we have the will and the confidence in our judiciary and judicial system and our democracy to move forward with those who want to work with us on the matter of the rule of law.”
