EU Minister Ömer Çelik’s remarks on Austrian Presidential elections
Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik commented on the Presidential elections in Austria and added that 47 percent of the popular vote "for a far-right candidate must be read very carefully for the sake of European politics".
EU Minister Ömer Çelik took his Twitter account to say although the Freedom Party lost the contest, the vote showed its political influence had increased.
EU Minister Ömer Çelik commented that promoting extreme-right and racist ideas in key EU countries would create major problems.
EU Minister Ömer Çelik added: "Even though the far-right has lost numerically, it has risen in politically in Austria".
On his official Twitter account, EU Minister Ömer Çelik said the following:
"What we said earlier has just come true. The ones who campaign with an anti-Turkish rhetoric always face political failure. The same happened in Austria where racism gradually prevails in political discourse. Candidate with anti-Turkish rhetoric lost the election. Yet, what we also said came true, too: When main stream politicians use racist rhetoric to compete with farright, then racism gets stronger."
