EU Minister Ömer Çelik’s interview published in German news portal WirtschaftsWoche

EU Minister and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik gave an interview to German news portal WirtschaftsWoche and expressed his views on Türkiye’s expectations from the German Goverment regarding FETÖ activities in Germany.

Europe failed the 'democracy test' following the deadly July 15 failed coup attempt, EU Minister Ömer Çelik said to WirtschaftsWoche, criticizing the bloc's indifference to the attempt to bring down the democratically elected government.

EU Minister Ömer Çelik added that no member-state of the European Union visited Türkiye following the coup attempt, even though they all went to France shortly after the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack in Paris, to show solidarity with the country.

The minister also noted that making changes to Türkiye's anti-terror laws would pose a security threat to Europe, while he underscored that Türkiye's accession to the EU would strategically, politically and economically benefit both sides.

"It would be a historical mistake to oppose Türkiye now" he said.

EU Minister Ömer Çelik reiterated once again that failure to ensure visa-liberalization for Turkish citizens under the scope of the EU-Türkiye readmission deal would lead the deal to fall apart.
