EU Minister Ömer Çelik met with Sir Alan Duncan, UK's Minister of State for Europe

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik met with Sir Alan Duncan, UK's Minister of State for Europe and the Americas in Ankara.

During the meeting at a working luncheon, bilateral relations, Türkiye-EU relations, post-Brexit developments in the EU and UK, Cyprus issue, irregular migration and cooperation against terrorism were discussed in detail.

A joint press coference was also held with Minister Alan Duncan.

Minister for EU Affairs, who evaluated the statement by German Chancellor Angela Merkel regarding the customs union during the press conference, said:

“This is an unfortunate statement. It is necessary to underline that an EU Member State should not instruct EU institutions and interfere in EU processes. There are principles which govern EU decision-making and how the institutions work. Unfortunately, these statements are extremely harmful.  These statements also damage EU’s credibility.”

- "EU institutions should act in accordance with the principles.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik indicated that discussions on who exerted power in and governed the EU as well as discussions that would weaken the EU should not be encouraged and said: “EU institutions should act in accordance with the principles, and EU procedures should be followed in accordance with the principles.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik said:

Türkiye may have bilateral issues with various EU Member States. These bilateral issues should not become an issue of Türkiye-EU relations.  If this is allowed, then the EU would no longer be a political union but a federal union.  In any case, should there be cooperation among these Member States, this would change the issue, causing a highly damaging transformation in the blueprint of the Union.

This issue is relevant to the recent increase in the tension between Germany and Türkiye.  The EU institutions should not allow Germany to turn the issue into a matter for the EU. If this is allowed, then the Prime Ministers, or Chancellors, and Governments of strong EU Member States will be taking decision in place of the European Commission, the Council and Parliament. This is a situation in contradiction to the fundamental mechanisms of the EU.”
