EU Minister Ömer Çelik Remarks regarding Austrian Prime Minister Kern’s statements

EU Minister and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik made a statement on his Twitter account regarding Austrian Prime Minister Kern’s appeal for joint action of EU countries to block Turkish politicians’ meetings in EU Member states.

EU Minister Ömer Çelik stated that blocking Turkish politicians’ meeting in some EU countries is undemocratic and a new phase in the violation of freedoms of expression and assembly.

Stating that a country as big as Türkiye may become an important issue in domestic politics of some countries, EU Minister Ömer Çelik added domestic political rivalries in those countries should also hold to standards.

EU Minister and Chief Negotiator continued his remarks as follows:

“How low the level of respect to fundamental values in some countries such as Austria, we'll keep reminding the fundamental values. It is so wrong that Austrian government uses the same rhetoric with racist movements of Europe. This is against fundamental values. It's also so dangerous that attacks on fundamental values come from governments like Austria. EU should take measures against such governments. EU should take measures against governments of some member states that produce racist, Islamophobic and anti-semitic policies.”

EU Minister Ömer Çelik also underlined that attitudes of some governments in EU threaten democracy and this attitude strengthens far right movements that are all enemies of fundamental values. EU Minister Ömer Çelik concluded his remarks calling for protection of fundamental values all over the world and stated that these values can not be left to racist Islamophobic anti-semitic policies.
