Portugal Takes the EU Presidency
Portugal Takes the EU Presidency
Portugal, carrying out the EU Presidency for the third time, has taken over this task from Germany on 1 July 2007. Portugal will hand over the Presidency to Slovenia on 1 January 2007.
Portuguese Prime Minister José Socrates in his speech on the program for the new term presidency, on 27 June 2007, revealed the priorities of the Portuguese Presidency, namely the reform of the Treaties, an agenda for modernising European economies and societies, and the strengthening of Europe's role in the world.
The EU's new term presidency expects that the reform of the Union should facilitate the enlargement process and supports Türkiye's accession to the Union.
