Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik Answered the Questions regarding the Agenda on 24 TV News Channel Broadcast in Brussels

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik answered the questions regarding the agenda on 24 TV News Channel Broadcast in Brussels where he paid an official visit.

Evaluating the latest state of affairs in Türkiye-EU relations, Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik said: “As you know we were going through a severe crisis for the last one year.  This crisis started for some other reasons before the 15 July coup attempt and deepened during the 15 July coup attempt through various arguments as a consequence of not giving Türkiye the support it expected and deserved.  Now at this stage, we may say that this crisis is frozen at least at a certain point."

Stressing that the talks held by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan within the context of of the NATO Summit provided an atmosphere that encouraged the creation of a new road map, Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik said: “Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the European Commission, proposed a new road map.  We are in a state to implement this road map to a large extent.  The most important part of this process is to increase mutual contacts.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik noted that if the European Union had demonstrated solidarity with Türkiye, the EU institutions would have sent a strong message abroad when a coup was attempted in a candidate country which is not an EU member, in a European country outside the borders of the EU.Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik emphasized that a message of solidarity from a Muslim country like Türkiye, from Ankara, would have been a very strong message against terrorist organisations such as the Da’esh.

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik indicated that the picture was quite clear regarding the coup attempt and said: “This was the most dangerous murderous attempt in terms of law and politics, one that murdered our people, bombarded our Parliament, and attempted to assassinate our President and our Prime Minister.”

Pointing to the reforms carried out by Türkiye and indicating that Türkiye’s bid for full EU membership had become a state policy, Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik also said: “We have to see this clearly. This State of Emergency is a requirement in order to protect democracy and the rule of law.  We would not have been able to fight against this organisation if we had not taken these measures.”
